AR-SD4DXTU series Step And Direction Controller

The AR-SD4DXTU series of boards are complete step-and-direction controllers for operating up to four step-and-direction stepper motor driver boards using a USB interface. They provide the capability of independently driving one to four stepper motors using external driver boards, such as those created by Applied Motion and Gecko. Since they have on-board high current drivers, they are capable of directly driving those external boards without external buffers.

They may also be controlled via RS232, if you use our RS232ToTTL Serial Adapter board.
The two connector options ("MTA-100" and "Screw Terminal") control how you connect most TTL I/O and motor wires to the board. The image shows the board with the screw terminal connectors installed.
- The 'MTA-100' option specifies use of latching Amp MTA-100 connectors, and is recommended for any production system. When the cables are correctly produced, the MTA-100 is vibration resistant, and is easier to use in a production environment.
- The "Screw Terminal" option specifies use of screw terminals for direct wire connection to the board. This is suggested for anyone who is just doing experiments or is connecting to just one or two motors
The board has ESD protection on most of the TTL inputs (except for the RST line). Note that the protection is only active when the board is connected to a properly grounded power supply, such that the GND connection on the board power connector goes to true earth ground.
If your signal sources for the TTL inputs need to be optically isolated (such as signals whose voltage range is in the range of 5 to 24 volts), you may elect to use our AR-OPTOISO4CHAN product to act as an input buffer.
There are three base versions of the SD4DX series of boards. The differences have to do with the configuration of the 'V0' and 'V1' pins on the board. This version is the AR-SD4DXTU, which makes V0 and V1 be available as generic TTL I/O ports.
- AR-SD4DXEU: makes V0 be GND, V1 be +5, for near pin compatibility with the retired SD4DEU and SD4DEI products
- AR-SD4DXTU: (this board) makes V0 and V1 be generic TTL I/O ports, for any use as is appropriate for extra ports.
- AR-SD4DXDU: makes V0 and V1 be 8-bit DAC outputs, which allows for similar control to the retired SD4DP series.
The firmware that is used describes the "personality" of the board. You can reprogram the board with either of these firmwares at any time using the supplied firmware update tool. If you like, you may use the cart comments field to request a particular firmware (remember: the SD4DXPotRouter firmware is installed by default, so you only need to do this if you would prefer the SD4DXNCRouter firmware to be preinstalled on your board.)
- SD4DXPotRouter (click to see the manual) allows for simultaneous independent asynchronous motion between the motors. This is normally the firmware preprogrammed onto the board at the time of your order.
- SD4DXNCRouter (click to see the manual) allows for pen-plotter-like control, wherein perfect rate scaling is automatically performed between the motors in order to generate the equivalent of straight-line motion if a pen plotter were to be attached.
